More than half a dozen lawsuits from former swimmers around the country are shedding light on a major abuse and molestation problem with USA Swimming certified coaches. USA Swimming is responsible for selecting and managing our Olympic swim team. As a result of legal pressure they have released a list of more than 50 coaches banned for life for sexual abuse. Yet there exists a totally confidential list of coaches that are facing expulsion hearings from USA Swimming.
Many experts state that coaching is an attractive role for child molesters because it brings them closer to young people. With athletes often spending significant amounts of time with coaches, in many cases away from the practice venue at competitions and events, they become vulnerable to incidents of abuse.
Predator coaches often are individuals everyone knows and trusts. Experts say they go out of their way to blend in with the everyday behavior in an organization such as USA Swimming. That in turn helps a perpetrator gain the trust of the young person through a “grooming” process. This might entail extra attention, gifts and/or innocent (albeit inappropriate) physical contact, such as a hug. By the time that behavior crosses the line, the athlete is already entangled in a relationship with the perpetrator and coming forward is difficult.
